About Bugzilla

Bugzilla is a custom 1970 Volkswagen Type 1 (Beetle). The list of modifications is extensive, but suffice it to say that the list of things that haven’t been modified is very short.

The major modifications are

  • 4″ roof chop
  • Suicide doors with single-window conversions
  • 3-4″ wider fiberglass fenders
  • 2110cc Bernie Bergmann engine
  • 2.5″ dropped spindles with adjustable beam
  • 4-way disc brakes and 5-bolt conversion
  • Front tires: 205/50 R17, Back tires: 255/40 R17

This car is not a trailer queen and gets driven about town for fun and to shows. It’s a blast to drive and people seem to enjoy it wherever it goes.

Autoloc sells a few different kits for suicide doors. Here’s a description of some of the products: http://www.thehoffmangroup.com/autoloc/suicideconfigure.lasso?step=operation – I can’t recall where I got the kit/plans for the ones we used but it was from a street-rod parts place. The street rods have thin doors just like a bug but usually aren’t as curved. A google search for “hidden hinge kit” turns up a few. They take a lot of work.

The single-window conversion works great. The only catch is that the shape of the chopped glass causes it to fall out of track slightly at the top near the B-pillar when rolling the windows up. I just hold it it place with a finger and it’s fine. They are down most of the time otherwise. No noise at all, up or down.
